At the end of each day, I am also having students fill out an exit slip that requires them to put a tally marks next to each sign that they used that day. The frequency of signs is all over the place! My really engaged students have more tally marks beside "I have a question, comment, or answer" and my distracted students have more tally marks by sharpening pencil, using bathroom, and drink of water. I guess that was to be expected, but still very interesting to see!
I'm having some technical difficulties with uploading my video on my computer, but I'm working on it! I've got some great friends that are helping me out and hopefully I'll have it posted soon!
I love that you are getting this feedback from the kids- I think that you are really learning a lot from them about how this is going. I like the comment from the student about not getting your attention. Sometimes I get so excited about something that I don't really pay attention to the feedback I get right away- some times it takes a while for it to sink in and then I have an aha moment. I think it is neat that they are tallying what signs that they use- it will be interesting to see if there are some trends- I like how you notice that the trends at this point seem to be with what type of student they are in in the first place and how this impacts the signs that they use. Sorry about the technology issues- how is that going for you? If you can get it onto any type of disc, dvd, or mini-casset and you want to send it to me and I can load it that would be fine
ReplyDeleteAt least your distracted students paid enough attention to learn the signs and are engaging in the use of them. I'm sure that is beneficial for you and for the more engaged kiddos. As for the video - hang in there. I know that you can do it...and you'll be so glad when you finish it!! :):)
ReplyDeleteThe correlation between the students' behavior and the signs used most is very interesting. The exist slips are also a great way to monitor the sign language.
ReplyDeleteThat is so wonderful that the students actually notice a difference in the lack of distractions! I bet that really makes them think before they choose to do something.
